What happened (sources)
Mid-December: residents noticed discoloured, foul-smelling tap water and repeatedly reported it to civic officials.
Dec 25: many households noticed a bitter taste and strong odour, and kept drinking it for lack of alternatives.
Dec 27: first cases of vomiting and diarrhoea. Dec 29: the mayor confirmed deaths. Over 1,400 people had symptoms.
Cause: a police-outpost toilet built over the drinking-water pipeline, without a septic tank.
A judicial commission examined 36 deaths and linked 24 directly to sewage in municipal pipelines (as reported by ETV Bharat, Sep 2026; the report is not public). Wikipedia lists 32 deaths.
Reconstruction assumptions
Individual complaint dates are not public. The replay assumes three homes on one lane complained on Dec 15, 16 and 17 ("mid-December"), within 250 m and 72 h, so the tripwire would fire on Dec 17. Sources: Wikipedia · ETV Bharat
